*Press Statement* * * August 18, 2011 *YCL supports the nomination of Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng for the position of Chief Justice by President Jacob Zuma* * * The Young Communist League of South Africa [Ufasimba] supports the decision by the President of the country to nominate Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng for the position of Chief Justice and head of the constitutional court.
We are strongly opposed to the view that Justice Mogoeng is not experienced for the position. He has been in the bench since 1997 and only two other judges have that much experience, so to say he is not experienced is totally gibberish. As the YCL we are more than convinced that he is the right person for the job. The fact that he is still young makes more sense to us. He will have more time to serve his country and bring stability to the judicially. Currently our judiciary is not transformed and Justice Mongoeng is the best candidate to transform it. Many decisions that have been made that leave much to be desired and President Zuma has nominated the right man to restore order. We also note with distraught the loud noise made by opposition parties, and we view it as just that “just loud noise”. Opposition parties are just that, opposition and their only job is to oppose even if something makes perfect sense. Their questioning of this nomination is also racist as they favour either Justice Edwin Cameron or Johan Froneman who are both white for the position. The Democratic Alliance and the others interestingly forget that previous Constitutional Court judges had been appointed even though they had no experience as judges. They also overlook the fact that Justice Mogoeng is the only judge of the Constitutional Court who had been a chief judicial officer of a court. As the YCL we are strongly convinced that Justice Mogoeng is the most senior and experienced thus he deserves the position more than anyone else.
