Cancel Massmart sale - NUMSAA "hoover" like Walmart will finish off South Africa says Numsa
LIVHUWANI MAMMBURU Published: 2011/08/18 04:23:18 PM The National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) has called for the nullification of the Walmart deal saying it is alarmed at the rate at which post-1994 South Africa has "embraced imperialism". Addressing the media in Johannesburg today, Numsa General Secretary Irvin Jim said the levels of de-industrialisation that are happening in SA are frightening. "The country is burning. A hoover like Walmart is basically coming to finish us off. We have seen the rapid increase in imperialist involvement in our financial, manufacturing, textiles, energy, transport, construction and now retail sectors without measures put in place to protect South African jobs and our national sovereignty," Jim said. He said Numsa is not against participation of foreign capital in the economy "as long as this is not at the expense of jobs and our national sovereignty". Walmart bought a controlling stake in Massmart in a R16,5bn transaction that was approved by the Competition Tribunal on May 31 on the condition that no jobs are cut for two years. Trade unions and the economic development, trade and industry and agriculture department had opposed the deal, arguing that it would lead to job losses and put local suppliers out of work. -- You are subscribed.
