![]() Cronin wants freeway projects to be stopped He wants Metrorail and bus services to be improved Deputy Minister of Transport and South African Communist Party (SACP) deputy general secretary Jeremy Cronin has come out in support of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) saying the federation is right to criticise the R20bn Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project. Addressing the Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU) congress in Johannesburg, Cronin says the future phases of the project must be stopped. "Cosatu is absolutely right, townships roads are collapsing and we do not have decent transport system. How can we afford to spend R20bn on this project? Unfortunately we are now R20bn in debt," he said. Cronin says the public outcry on e-tolling must be used to demand a decent public transport system. "Let us spend the money on public transport instead by improving Metrorail, by getting our bus services right and by getting decent bus rapid transportation in cities that do not have it," he said.
