*NUM Media Release, 20 September 2011* *NUM meets the SABC over skewed reporting*The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has this morning met with the management of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) to register its unhappiness over what it views as skewed reporting and manipulation of the SABC newsroom. The meeting went very well and was fruitful with the SABC committing to a thorough investigation and promising decisive action.
The National Union of Mineworkers leadership will submit a report on the matter to its National Executive Committee (NEC) sitting on Thursday and Friday this week. The National Executive Committee is the NUM's highest decision-making body apart from the Central Committee and National Congress. The union has vowed to keep a very close eye on developments at the broadcaster whilst the NEC will pronounce what next step to take.
The NUM made it clear to the SABC that it requires no favour but expects the SABC to act in accordance with its public broadcaster mandate as well as to avoid interference from its board in the operations of the corporation.
The NUM further insisted that the SABC must avoid partisan and factional reporting at all times.
