*SASCO Supports the Lesbian and Gay Marches* * *
*23 September 2011* The South African Students’ Congress (SASCO) wishes to pledge its full support for the lesbian, gay, transgendered, bisexual and intersex (LGTBi) Pride marches taking place all over the country tomorrow, 24 September . Pride marches are regarded as spaces to express outrage at the violations that LGTBi people still face in South Africa because of their sexuality. As an organization, we have committed ourselves to champion the cause of the oppressed in this country. This includes lesbian, gay and transgendered people who suffer unmentionable forms of discrimination from communities, religious groups, cultural groups and many other facets of society. The plight of lesbian women is particularly pricking to us as an organization whose membership is significantly female and young. Lesbian women in this country continue to be battered and bruised, raped and maimed and simply not enough is being done to confront the problem. Today, many young women live under the constant fear of what is now known as “corrective rape”. Many lesbian, particularly black working class women do not get to access to higher education due to the disruption of their early schooling life by discrimination from education authorities and other learners. We call on SASCO members across the country to pledge solidarity and oppose the oppression of lesbian, gay and transgendered people. *For details Contact:* *Mbulelo Mandlana (President)* *071 879 3408* *Or* *Lazola Ndamase (Secretary General)* *082 679 8718* -- You are subscribed.
