![]() KZN ANCYL seeks ANC intervention Durban - The ANC has been asked to intervene in a stand-off between the suspended ANC Youth League's KwaZulu-Natal executive committee and its national leadership. "We have written to the African National Congress national executive committee for necessary intervention and action," ANCYL KwaZulu-Natal chairperson Mthandeni Dlungwane told reporters in Durban on Thursday. The league's national leaders decided this week to strip the provincial executive of its power. General secretary Sindiso Magaqa said the decision was made because of "serious divisions with the provincial executive". Dlungwane said members of the suspended committee decided at a meeting on Wednesday to refer the issue to the ANC's national executive. "We have written to the national executive, through Gwede Mantashe, requesting its intervention, and we have made the provincial ANC leadership aware of the move." Dlungwane said the committee was disappointed at how the ANCYL's national leadership had handled the matter. He argued that procedure had not been followed and that the ANCYL's national working committee did not have the power to disband structures. Dlungwane and most provincial executive committee members believed the decision to disband was made after they refused to support ANCYL president Julius Malema during his recent appearance before an ANC disciplinary hearing. They also claimed the ANCYL leadership did not want them because they wanted President Jacob Zuma to be re-elected for a second term next year. Dlungwane said most of the league in the province's regions was fully behind the suspended provincial executive committee. Some of them were represented at Thursday's news briefing. "We are against what has happened. We still recognise this provincial executive. We will die when this provincial structure dies," said Jomo Sibiya, chairperson of the ANCYL's eThekwini region - the biggest ANCYL region in the country. Mthandeni Ngcobo, who chairs the lower south coast region, said his region also opposed the suspension of the KwaZulu-Natal structure. - SAPA -- You are subscribed. This footer can help you.
