ANC Youth League battle far from over

The battle between the ANC Youth League's national and KwaZulu-Natal leaders is far from over, with the provincial executive unshaken by the stripping of its powers.

Members of the provincial executive committee said they would challenge the letter sent by ANC Youth League secretary-general Sandiso Magaqa informing them their powers would be removed.

Magaqa yesterday refused to explain what the national working committee meant by "infighting" as the reason for stripping the KwaZulu-Natal leadership of its powers, including holding or attending meetings under the league banner.

"We are meeting the ANCYL national executive committee at the weekend and will deliberate, but as it stands, the provincial executive has been stripped of its powers due to infighting," he said.

eThekwini branch members held an urgent meeting at the Durban City Hall on Wednesday night and declared they would not to be bullied by the "factionalist" national committee.

They reaffirmed their backing for President Jacob Zuma at the 2012 ANC elective conference. Their support for Zuma may be one of the reasons the national committee wants to disband the provincial leadership.

The provincial wing also believes it is being punished for not sending members to support youth league president Julius Malema at his disciplinary hearing in Johannesburg last month.

"Our executive resolved that the procedure and culture of the organisation has not been adhered to. We have asked the ANC NEC for necessary intervention and action on the issue," provincial ANC Youth League chairman Mthandeni Dlungwane said yesterday.

However, he said his executive would continue to engage the youth league national executive on the "issue at hand and other political matters".

He said the province still did not know why its powers were removed, but members believed it was because they had taken a strong stance against sending members to support Malema at Luthuli House.

Dlungwane said the ANC was "bleeding" over the issue.

The league's national executive was in KwaZulu-Natal last week for a meeting, which the provincial executive missed.

Dlungwane said he had told Malema they could not attend and had given him an alternative date.

"We are still committed to meet on October 2 as an agreed date."

Provincial executive member Bongani Dlamini denied there was infighting in the provinc e and called for the ANC to intervene in the youth league battle.

There was "a lot that was not in order in the office of the national secretary-general," Dlamini said.

"It's clear there are challenges in the secretary-general's office. It's like entering a kitchen that has a lot of knives and you need to exercise more caution."
