League appeals to ANC after provincial powers stripped

THE African National Congress (ANC) Youth League in KwaZulu- Natal has appealed to Luthuli House to save them from what they see as a purge by youth leader Julius Malema, after the league announced that the provincial body’s powers would be taken away.

The province’s executive committee (PEC) was stripped of its powers this week after it defied a national leadership directive to support Mr Malema at his first appearance before the ANC national disciplinary committee last month.

Yesterday, the PEC wrote to ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe requesting the ANC’s national executive committee intervene to reverse the decision by league’s national working committee .

ANC spokesman Keith Khoza confirmed that Mr Mantashe had received the correspondence from KwaZulu-Natal. "The letter will be processed by structures of the ANC," said Mr Khoza.

The ANC will have to tread carefully in deciding how to intervene in the league ’s affairs, and avoid being accused of interference.

The clashes in the league appear to be linked to the mother body’s succession battles, as Mr Malema is accused of purging people who are opposed to his campaign to replace ANC leaders. An insider close to the process said the ANC would have to investigate whether there was any merits in the "stripping of powers" and if it was in line with the league’s constitution. "Maybe they will not want to intervene if the reasons are solid," said the leader.

However, he added that the party may recommend that the decision be reversed if it found that the process was flawed.

A league leader in KwaZulu- Natal said the provincial executive was confident the ANC would rule in their favour. League secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa said the decision was taken after divisions emerged within the PEC.

However, this was disputed by provincial chairman Mthandeni Dlungwane. "I don’t know what divisions they are talking about. As far as we are concerned the organisation is united in KZN," he said.
