*COSATU condemns Youth League leader’s reported remarks *

The Congress of South African Trade Unions strongly condemns remarks
reportedly made in Kimberley on Saturday 22 October 2011 by ANC Youth
League Deputy President, Ronald Lamola.

He is reported to have said that “Next year we will replace Zuma with
Motlanthe as president and we will also replace the secretary-general
with Fikile Mbalula”, and that “it is in the ANC culture for the deputy
president to take over from the president”.

He also attacked SACP General Secretary, Blade Nzimande, accusing him of
turning “Chris Hani’s SACP into an Oxford Dictionary... a party that
just does nothing but merely comes up with new words such as
tenderpreneur”.

COSATU has reaffirmed that it supports the main demands which the Youth
League is making in its Marches for Economic Freedom on 27 and 28
October 2011, but totally condemns any attempts to use the marches for
personal attacks on ANC or alliance leaders or to open up a premature,
divisive and dangerous succession debate within the ANC.

We demand that the ANCYL ensure that their demonstrations are peaceful
and orderly and that they stick to the issues of economic freedom and
youth empowerment and do not use the march for narrow factional battles.

COSATU also wishes to correct a claim by ANCYL Spokesperson, Floyd
Shivambu, that “COSATU General Secretary would join the march”. The
federation’s decision on whether or not to participate in the marches
can only be taken following an engagement with the ANCYL leadership
