POPCRU MESSAGE OF SUPPORT FOR THE POLICE KILLING MARCH AT SOWETO ON THE 27TH
OCTOBER 2011
Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union, the largest Trade Union within the
Criminal Justice has supported the march against police killings taking place
on the 27th of October 2011 taking place in Soweto from BP Garage along Maponya
Mall, Pimville towards Moroka Police Station and later to Regina Mundi, where a
full prayer session will be held around 10h40.
The July 2011 Summit on Police Killing in Boksburg this year alluded to
disturbing negative impact of these killings, amongst others on; lowering the
morale within the service, undermining of respect for rule of law and respect
for human life and also bringing unhappiness in the families of all the victims.
We reiterate our stance against this scourge through the pledge we signed in
which we said;
        * Coordination of stakeholders to prevent police killings must be
sustained at all levels of service points within the service,
        * SAPS should modernize equipment i.e. bullet proof vests to benchmark
internationally
        * Build synergy of efforts within the criminal justice system and
community structures to fight police killings and crime,
        * Continuous Summit must be convened at all levels to sustain the
campaign,
        * Resuscitate community policing forums and other people’s bodies for
civilian participation, and
        * Proactive involvement of families of all victims of police killings
and also support assistance of orphans by all stakeholders must be encouraged
as such.

The killing of police in South Africa should be urgently addressed by us all.
Last year 107 members were killed on duty and enough is enough!
POPCRU recommits itself to the spirit of the Pledge as we revisit its content
and practicalize it in all our daily operations and we further say;
We, the undersigned and as participants of the Ministerial Summit focusing on
attacks on police, note with disdain the high numbers of members of the police
service, who are killed in the line of duty each year.
We believe that the commission of such crimes constitute an assault on our
constitutional democracy and acknowledge that the death and attacks on
dedicated members of our police service is a cause of great pain and sorrow to
all peace loving South Africans.
We, therefore resolve to strengthen our work towards a stable and peaceful
South Africa in a collaborative way.
We further commit ourselves to participate in finding solutions to address
attacks on members of our police services and we pledge to intensify our
efforts to scale-down such attacks.
