*Replies to Pudemo on Relations Between PUDEMO and CPS* Dear Comrades,We thank you for your communication of 28 November 2011 concerning the relationship between the CPS and PUDEMO.
There are a number of points that we should respond to. We hope that you will take the time to analyse and consider these responses.
The CPS is a sovereign and independent political party that supports the freedom movement in Swaziland and the many initiatives of this movement and its various elements. This support does not imply formal relations with any of these elements. The CPS is free to analyse, support or criticise the activities of any political formation, NGO or network as it sees fit.
The CPS is the only socialist political formation in the freedom movement of Swaziland. In being so, and in supporting or liaising with other elements of the freedom, the CPS does not presuppose that these formations share the ideology and political goals of our Party.
The CPS proposes that Swaziland should become a republic. We do not presuppose that our support for PUDEMO in any way implies that PUDEMO shares this aim.
The CPS never stipulates what PUDEMO's policy or strategy should be.The CPS views PUDEMO as having the potential of being the broad unifying movement for freedom in Swaziland, which unites incongruent formations with the common goal of moving our country towards democracy and liberation. This does not imply that when we view PUDEMO as such in our strategic and other documents that we are suggesting a formal strategic, tactical or other relationship with PUDEMO.
As its name suggests, PUDEMO describes itself that it is a 'movement', a broad formation, and not a political party. There is nothing in PUDEMO's constitution that forbids its members or supporters from being members of other formations. The NEC has arbitrarily and unconstitutionally ruled on this matter to suit its own antipathy to the CPS.
Simply because the CPS was formed by people who have also been active in PUDEMO in no way suggests that PUDEMO has anything to do with the CPS. As you recognise there is a pluralism of ideological viewpoints among the members of PUDEMO, ranging from anti-capitalist to avidly pro-capitalist: there is nothing in PUDEMO's rules that aims to restrict the other activities of these members in pursuing these activities in other forums, particularly if those forums resolutelysupport PUDEMO.
Even if by being members of the CPS its comrades were to 'forfeit membership of PUDEMO' this in no way limits what the CPS can say about PUDEMO in its documents and communications.
The NEC's observation that comrades who formed the CPS are ones who are under disciplinary action as PUDEMO members is of no consequence to either the formation of the CPS or its support for PUDEMO. The CPS was formed because there was a need for a Marxist-Leninist political party in Swaziland that specifically advocates a socialist road for Swaziland. PUDEMO is not a socialist party, nor is it Marxist-Leninist in either its intellectual capability or general political inclination.
We welcome the NEC's statement that a formal relationship might be established between PUDEMO and the CPS in the future. But we do not think that this is contingent on our continued support for PUDEMO.
We note the NEC's statement that it is not taking an 'anti-communist' stance in its castigation of the CPS: we beg to differ and see this communication as motivated by nothing other than sectarian anti-communism that is wholly out of character with PUDEMO's long-standing democratic, pluralistic and progressive tradition.
The CPS will continue to advocate socialism as the most viable and necessary future for our country. It will continue to be aware that the rest of the Swazi pro-democracy movement does not necessarily share this view, and it will continue to voice support for or criticism of whatever political, mass movement or other formations that it sees fit in the context of its analysis of the current situation in Swaziland.
