SADTU
*SADTU Media Statement, 27 January 2012* *SADTU supports Corruption Watch*The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) heartily welcomes the launch of Corruption Watch by union federation COSATU.
Corruption Watch is a positive step towards giving ordinary South Africans a powerful role towards contributing in the fight against corruption. It is only when communities stand up and raise their voices that we can see corruption being defeated.
The devastating effects of corruption continue to be felt on a daily basis more especially by poor black South Africans. Millions have been robbed of their constitutionally enshrined rights they fought so hard for such as the right to shelter, education and healthcare due to corruption.
We are aware there has been more focus on corruption in Public Service. However; the private sector as well as civil society, are also rife with corruption. We therefore urge society to use this platform to report incidents on all fronts.Unions are also not immune from corruption, with the South African Clothing and Textile Union (SACTWU) pension fund scandal being the latest saga. We call on members of unions to raise their voices whenever they see corruption within their ranks.
As the biggest teachers' union in South Africa SADTU will - in line with our 2030 Vision pillar of Creating a Learning Nation -- appeal to all teachers to prioritize corruption in the teaching of Life Orientation. We need to teach our children the correct values from a young age so that they grow up to become responsible citizens who make the interest of the nation their first priority.
We also urge for the protection of the brave and loyal citizens who will use this opportunity and report incidents of corruption. We call on the state not to use its apparatus to intimidate people into silence but to encourage them to come forward.
We also call on the Corruption Watch to also provide for a toll-free number in order to give access to more people to report.
