What did President Zuma say? No more than any of us would say as communists: That we need more working class leaders on the ANC NEC.
COSATU itself has said as much, in the past. I may be wrong, but I do not remember the ANC President inviting Zwelinzima Vavi in person to serve on the ANC NEC. I don't think that was his point, although he did not exclude that possibility, either. We must be careful not to run after the spin that the bourgeois media put on things like this. The problem at Polokwane was that COSATU was not ready, and it had no candidates who were in a position to be nominated for election to the ANC NEC. COSATU missed the boat at Polokwane. It was, in the words of at least one comrade who was present: "embarrassing". The point is to avoid, at Mangaung, a repeat of that embarrassment. It is not about Z Vavi as such. The ANC NEC is 80 people. The workers need to have more than one, and even much more than ten, on the NEC. The President is correct to remind the mass movement of the working class to do its homework this time around, and to do it in good time. The recent noise has come from the Vavi side, like a girl loudly refusing a proposal that she never received. Or like a foreign dignitary who waits outside until he is assured that the red carpet and the trumpets are well prepared and waiting for him. Such noise could obscure the important objective, which is to get worker leaders into sites of power.
