I think that the starting point in this discussion would be to identify that, perhaps, NUMSA president might have misunderstood president Jacob Zuma’s comments regarding the need for more working class leaders on the ANC NEC, to be an invitation to the GS of COSATU to avail himself for an NEC position within the ANC come December.
Based on this analysis; I would then agree with cde Dominic’s expressions in that I also don’t recall there being a personal invitation, to Vavi, to serve on the ANC NEC, and more importantly when he cautions on not “running after the spin that the bourgeois media put on things like this.” I also believe that in his comments that: “The recent noise has come from the Vavi side, like a girl loudly refusing a proposal that she never received. Or like a foreigndignitarywho waits outside until he is assured that the red carpet and the trumpets are well prepared and waiting for him.” He, himself, is falling into the same trap that he had cautioned of earlier. Cde Sive’s comments that “Vavi is underminig the ANC and those that invite him to serve movement” I think were a result of the “mistaken” misinterpretation that was given to us by media. Vavi! Comrades has not gone on any public platform denouncing his unavailabilty, out of the blue. We must remember that it is journalists and media that would ask him of his availability to serve in the NEC, and thus the response, that he is not available. I do not think that it is wrong for any leader, or indivual for that matter, to state their unavailability to serve, in the NEC of the ANC, or any structure, if they feel that they are not yet ready to serve the said structure. If comrades would have preferred Vavi to respond in a more diplomatic manner, regarding his unavailability, they must also keep in mind that the likelihood is that media would have still taken this too and spun it out to project him as someone who is perhaps waiting in the wings to see what happens in Provinces before announcing his availability. I also differ with Vavi’s remarks, regarding the confusion of workers and feel that, perhaps there was no need to make mention of such, or rather he should be more careful on his wording in future. No more than any of us would say as communists: That we need more working class leaders on the ANC NEC. COSATU itself has said as much, in the past. I may be wrong, but I do not remember the ANC President inviting Zwelinzima Vavi in person to serve on the ANC NEC. I don't think that was his point, although he did not exclude that possibility, either. We must be careful not to run after the spin that the bourgeois media put on things like this. The problem at Polokwane was that COSATU was not ready, and it had no candidates who were in a position to be nominated for election to the ANC NEC. COSATU missed the boat at Polokwane. It was, in the words of at least one comrade who was present: "embarrassing". The point is to avoid, at Mangaung, a repeat of that embarrassment. It is not about Z Vavi as such. The ANC NEC is 80 people. The workers need to have more than one, and even much more than ten, on the NEC. The President is correct to remind the mass movement of the working class to do its homework this time around, and to do it in good time. The recent noise has come from the Vavi side, like a girl loudly refusing a proposal that she never received. Or like a foreign dignitary who waits outside until he is assured that the red carpet and the trumpets are well prepared and waiting for him. Such noise could obscure the important objective, which is to get worker leaders into sites of power.
