JOHANNESBURG - General Secretary of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu), Mugwena Maluleke says the issue around teacher development depends on union-driven programmes in collaboration with the national department of Basic Education.

Speaking to The Citizen following the union’s three day national education, labour and gender policy conference, held in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, Maluleke called on the department to fast track the implementation of the Integrated Strategic Planning Framework for Teacher Education and Development, as a matter of urgency.

The framework outlines a 15-year roll-out of improved and expanded teacher education and development opportunities with the aim of improving the quality of teaching and learning in schools.

This past weekend’sconference sought to provide the union with an opportunity to develop policies on education, labour and gender that will strive to ensure the realisation of its 2030 Vision.

While acknowledging the strides made post 1994, Maluleke said more still needs to be done, especially at Early Childhood Development (ECD).

“More has to be done in ensuring that practitioners at that level are happy in the form of benefits as they are still receiving stipends.”
