*NUM Media Release, 10 July 2012* *10 000 mineworkers down tools to observe a day of mourning*Over ten thousand (10 000) mineworkers will this morning observe a day of mourning at Goldfields' Driefontein mine in Carletonville in honour of five miners who perished last week.
The mourners will be addressed by the national Minister of Mineral Resources, the Hon. Susan Shabangu, the NUM President Senzeni Zokwana, the NUM General Secretary Frans Baleni, and would be graced by the Chief Inspector of Mines.
The event is scheduled to begin at 09h00 in the morning at the Driefontein Arena at the Driefontein mine in Carletonville.
Meanwhile, the proto team has failed to extinguish the fire on the 36/31 line as it has jumped onto the 35 level of the mine. The fire was behind the deaths of the miners that died due to smoke inhalation.
"We need to send a very strong message on the safety front" says Erick Gcilitshana, the NUM's National Secretary for Health and Safety.
