*NUM condemns Zimbabwe’s ZESA Holdings over suspensions*

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) condemns Zimbabwe’s ZESA holdings on its suspensions of the Zimbabwe Energy Workers Union (ZEWU) President Mrs Angeline Chitambo, two National Executive Members Comrade T. Shumba, Comrade D. Mukote, 61 members in the Eastern Region as well as 71 other members in the Northern Region. These suspensions send a very terrible message and taints badly the image of Zimbabwe’s Government of National Unity (GNU).

The suspensions further calls into questions Harare’s commitment to uphold a human rights culture and confirms claims of a crackdown on activists. In suspending all these leaders of ZEWU, the employer alleges that they incited other ZESA employees to protest against the company’s refusal to pay its employees salary rates which were in line with a 2012 voluntary arbitral award. The arbitral award sealed the 2012 collective bargaining dispute.

The National Union of Mineworkers appeals to both the state in Zimbabwe as well as the management and leadership of ZESA to immediately stop these infringements on the right to freedom of expression, association and the right to organise.

“We are strengthened by the determination of the Zimbabwean workers in continuing to protest even in the wake of adversity” says Frans Baleni, the NUM General Secretary.

“Our hearts are with them in these most trying times and we appeal for more global solidarity with the Zimbabwean workers” says Baleni.
