ANC Women's League
*ANC Women's League Announcement, 24 July 2012* *ANCWL Opening Women's Month* /with a/ *Centenary Lecture on Charlotte Maxeke* /by/ *President Jacob Zuma*The ANCWL will be celebrating the opening of women's month, while remembering and honouring the founder of the women's rights movement in South Africa, the great Charlotte Maxeke.
Charlotte Maxeke was a woman that the women of today can look up to for inspiration and guidance even when tackling the issues faced by modern day women. She was not only the first black woman graduate in South Africa, but she was also one of the first black South Africans to fight for freedom from the exploitative and social conditions faced by African women.
Charlotte Maxeke was not just a gender activist for women's rights but she was a human rights and anti-apartheid activist in her own right.
As we celebrate the centenary of the ANC and honor our past presidents we cannot look passed the contributions made by the many great women who have served this organisation.
It is with this acknowledgement of women's contribution over the past 100 years, that President, Jacob Zuma will be giving a memorial lecture on Charlotte Maxeke, before unveiling a road named after her.
This is a very important year for the women's struggle as we celebrate the 100 years of the ANC, it is also 56 years since the remarkable march by women in 1956 that helped change the political landscape of the country. As a tribute to the women of 1956, 56 years on, we will be marching along the newly named Charlotte Maxeke Street to kick off Women's month celebrations.
The ANC would like to invite women to join in this historic occasion and take up the opportunity to gain insight into one of the heroines of our liberation movement.
Women will start to gather on Charlotte Maxeke Street at 08h00 for the march and then proceed to the Presidential lecture which will start 12h00 at the University of the Free State.
