*NUM Media Release, 17 August 2012* *NUM welcomes commission of inquiry*The National Union of Mineworkers welcomes President Jacob Zuma's announcement to establish a commission of inquiry into the deaths of Mineworkers at Marikana.
The NUM strongly believes that such a commission is necessary and would help unearth the motive forces behind the senseless violence.
The commission should greatly assist the country to understand the underlying threats faced by our very young democracy where criminals seem bent to undermine the rule of law.
The public display of dangerous weapons and accompanied threats and intimidation should have no place in the South African democracy. Likewise, the blatant lies spread that caused so much confusion and unnecessary deaths.
