*The YCL condemns the personal attacks on Deputy Minister Ebrahim Ebrahim
by the SAZF*

The Young Communist League South Africa (uFasimba) condemns the personal
attacks directed to the Deputy Minister of the department of international
relations and co-operation (DIRCO), Ebrahim Ebrahim. The statement titled
‘SAZF CONDEMNS DEP. MINISTER EBRAHIM’, issued on the 3rd of December seeks
to separate the Deputy Minister from the ANC collective’s view on the
recent escalation of violence in the Gaza Strip.

As we expressed in our statement on the 16th August supporting the South
African’s government’s policy on Palestine, we condemn the attempts by the
South African Zionist Organisation (SAZF) to isolate the Deputy Minister
from the organisation he represents. The repeated personal attacks on the
Deputy Minster cause us to wonder why he is singled out for unwarranted
criticism.

The SAZF statement says of the ANC statement that “Such fiery rhetoric is
not conventionally used on the global policymaking arena”. The recent
condemnation and diplomatic measures taken against Israel for increased
settlement building by countries including Britain, France and Australia
belies this. Furthermore, we consider it strange that the SAZF which claims
to support a two-state solution for Israel/Palestine has not condemned the
recent settlement building, particularly in E1 which is a highly sensitive
area and it is largely acknowledged that settlements in this area will deal
a death blow to a two-state solution.

We have yet to see any criticism from the SAZF regarding the recent
outbreaks of xenophobia towards African refugees in Israel and the racist
utterances and policies by Israel towards African asylum seekers. It is the
SAZF and not the ANC who should be embarrassed by their silence on racism
and prejudice.

As we resolved in our National Lekgotla 23-25 November, we will continue to
call for the immediate temporary suspension of diplomatic relations between
South Africa and Israel until Israel halts all expansions into the West
Bank and commits to respect an independent Palestinian State. We also
pledge our support for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions in South
Africa (BDS SOUTH AFRICA)
