*FAWU Press Statement, 17 January 2013* *Industrial Action by workers in Wild Coast Abalone* /at Hag-Hag next to Butterworth in the Eastern Cape/250 members of the Food and Allied Workers Union [FAWU] started their protected industrial action on the 15th January 2013 following a dispute and failure to arrive at a settlement on wages, working conditions and benefits.
FAWU cannot accept that these 250 workers earn as little as R1 200 a month, R300 less than what the minimum wages of farms sector, yet they work with an Abalone Fish, which is normally destined for lucrative export market.
Our members in Wild Coast Abalone are tired of this naked exploitation and are prepared to hold on to this strike for as long as it takes until their demands are met.
We call on the employer to exercise reason and plead with his conscience and revert back to the table with reasonable offer that will see these workers' wages almost doubling to compensate for years of under-payment and ruthless exploitation.
Meanwhile, workers demand for an adjustment of their wages to R16.87 is not only just and noble but also too low to demand given the going rate of wages in this company. We further call on the Inspection Directorate of the Department of Labour to mount an urgent investigation on the wages and working conditions in this company.
