events (including rallies, lectures, cultural performances, music shows, films
and workshops) that seek to raise awareness of Israel's apartheid policies
toward the indigenous Palestinians and garner support for the Boycott,
Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel campaign which is aimed to bring
an end to Israel's apartheid policies and violations of international law

WHY ORANGE FARM?
Orange Farm, situated in the deep South of Johannesburg, was formed in October
1988. This was at a time of local political protest with the added dimension of
South Africa coming under increasing pressure from the international community
through the imposition boycotts, divestment and sanctions against the Apartheid
South African regime. Meanwhile, just a year before in Palestine, the First
Intifada (uprising) against the government of Israel was taking place...
It was during these times that the name "Palestine" was first associated with
the struggle of the people of Orange Farm. In line with the principles of the
ANC (specifically the principle of Progressive Internationalism) and within the
context of the First Intifada, members of the ANC (and SACP) in Orange Farm
chose to name the ANC (and SACP) branch in Orange Farm as "Greater Palestine
Central".
The name was chosen as a symbol of saying that we share and are in solidarity
with the Palestinians in their struggle against Israeli colonialism, apartheid
and occupation. At their core, the South African and Palestinian struggles are
common struggles: against two racially motivated and oppressive regimes.
It was in 1991 in a local stadium (later named "Chris Hani Sporting Complex")
where the late General-Secretary of the SACP and senior ANC leader, Chris Hani,
endorsed the name "Greater Palestine Central" for the branch of the ANC in
Orange Farm, as an expression of solidarity with the Palestinian people, the
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and the Palestinian struggle against Israeli
oppression. [Based on article by Makhosonke and Patrick Mnyengeza].
