YCLSA DEMANDS TRAFFIC LIGHTS TO STOP ANNAUL CARNAGE ON THE N1 HEXVALLEY

As the Young Communist League of South Africa (uFasimba) firstly and most
importantly send our condolences to the family of those who were injured or
passed away in the horrific car accident that occurred on the N1 in the
Hexvalley.

However, sending condolences and picking up pieces is a reactionary approach
and we believe that the accident could and should have been avoided. It has
become an annual event that the Hexvalley, a small valley located along the N1,
makes national news because of tragic accidents leading to mass death and
injury of dozens of people. We believe that there is a simple way for
government to avoid such tragedy and that is by putting traffic lights at 3
points which are renowned for tragedy. Why does the provincial government and
local government in the Boland merely wait until disaster strikes, then run
around to catch TV coverage?

We demand that the municipality and provincial government undertake to install
traffic lights immediately. If the government does not heed our call, we will
be forced to mobilize and apply pressure on these reactionary leaders by
petitioning them, protesting and possibly even supporting the community who
have begun threatening to block the N1, forcing traffic to take an alternative
route (which has stop streets).

YCLSA members active in De Doorns have informed us that more people die in the
Hexvalley from car accidents, than crime. In our view failure to implement
preventative measures is criminal and tantamount to enabling the mass murder of
innocent passengers and we therefore demand these 3 traffic lights as a matter
of urgency.

The death of entire bus or taxi loads of passengers has become so common that
families traveling from Cape Town to other areas (like the Eastern Cape) for
Easter and other festivities, now divide themselves into several different
taxis and buses to avoid the risk of entire families dying on the road. It is
the responsibility of government to ensure that the roads are safe and that
such accidents are avoided, it is therefore upon them to show that they are
doing more than attending to TV interviews and funeral in reactionary attempts
to show that they care.
