Major announcement expected amid reports of DA, Agang merger Benita Enoch, eNCA, Johannesburg, 27 January 2014 A major announcement about the Democratic Alliance and political newcomer Agang SA is due to be made, an eNCA source said on Monday. The source told eNCA that the two parties would be expected to announce a merger at a press conference in Cape Town on Tuesday. eNCA spoke to federal executive chairperson of the DA, James Selfe, who confirmed on Monday that an important press conference would be taking place. He, however, refused to divulge details ahead of the briefing. Selfe said: "There may have been discussions [about Agang and the DA joining forces], but I cannot confirm nor deny [Tuesday's announcement would be about a merger]." The source told eNCA that a meeting between other members of the DA's federal executive on Friday discussed the way forward once the two parties merged. Asked how he felt about a merger between Agang and the DA, Selfe said he believed it was a good idea. "I mean, it is obviously a good idea to consolidate into a single political force. And that has been why we did the deal we did with the Independent Democrats." Agang spokesman Thabo Leshilo was not available for comment on Monday. The party instead referred eNCA to a press statement uploaded to their website on Sunday. In the statement, the party said: "In the run-up to the election you will read all sorts of suggestions in the media, and there will be rumours everywhere. Do not read any truth into them. "We make no secret of the fact that we talk to other parties in South Africa. We make no secret of the fact that all parties and citizens need to stand together against the ANC and those who want to use our resources to fund their own egos and lifestyles." In June 2013 Agang rejected a deal with the DA. At the time, Agang leader Mamphela Ramphele was quoted as saying that she and DA leader Helen Zille could not agree on the need for a new political party. News of fresh talks between the parties was published on Sunday. City Press quoted a senior member of the DA in its report, which said "cooperation between the parties could involve the DA supporting Ramphele as presidential candidate". -eNCA From: http://www.enca.com/south-africa/major-announcement-expected-amid-reports-da -agang-merger -- -- You are subscribed.
