NEHAWU Media Statement 29 January, 2014 Dr Mamphele Ramphele and the DA Collective are Agents of Established White Capital The decision by Dr Mampele Ramphele to run as a Democratic Alliance (DA) presidential candidate is not surprising because her politics fits in perfectly with what the DA stands for. What motivates the DA and Dr Ramphele is to defend the material interests of the established white capital and everything they have done previously points to this undeniable fact. Dr Ramphele has proved herself to lack any testable core convictions and is only loyal to herself and her bread. She accumulated most of her wealth under the policies championed by the ANC that she apparently holds in low regard. She now denounces those policies because of political ambitions. Unfortunately Dr Ramphele does not understand the South African politics as evidenced by her decision to disclose her financial affairs to the public. South Africans viewed that kind of exhibitionism as nothing but an indirect boast to charm the naive and unsuspecting. NEHAWU's experience NEHAWU is not shocked by the latest happenings because we know the real Dr Mamphele. She will do anything for personal accolades and admiration from the capitalist class; even disregard principles. As a Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Town she destroyed worker's livelihoods during her tenure. In 1999 under her leadership, the UCT unilaterally outsourced all support services. This exercise resulted in over three hundred (3000 workers losing their jobs because most support staff employees were not accepted by the outsourced companies and those that stayed to work had to do so for R7.50 an hour with no benefits. Dr Ramphele argued that it was not the responsibility of the university to interfere with employment practices of outsourced companies and it was not the university's core business to involve itself in the market. Our union pursued the case all the way to the Constitutional Court, which ruled in favour of the workers. All the retrenched workers ultimately received financial compensation from the university to recompense for its failure to respect the law and to properly protect its employees. It was however a case of too little too late. Most of the retrenched workers had lost their homes, some lost their marriages, some had died and almost all of them were either not working or their children were no longer at school. The real Ramphele Dr Ramphele takes pride in her record at UCT and of having served the World Bank with its infamous neoliberal policies and conditional loans that have caused untold misery for the poor internationally. She went on to serve in the boards of mining companies; a sector based on apartheid work patterns of migrant workers with huge liability in relation to occupational health and safety. She did nothing to transform either the World Bank or the mining sector. We are aware of her many transgressions and contradictions; and most people that were misled by her are starting to discover the real Dr Mamphele. Her adventure into politics is about herself, and herself alone, and we think she has at last found a political home that fits in perfectly with her line of thinking in DA.
