ANC Statement, 30 January 2014 By-Elections held on 29 January 2014 The African National Congress welcomes the results of the by-elections held yesterday, 29 January 2014, in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng and Western Cape. 16 wards in total were contested and the ANC won 12 of these. In the Eastern Cape where 14 wards were contested, 12 of these were a result of the ANC suspending 12 of its ward councillors in the Mbashe Municipality. Of the total of 14 wards contested in the Province, the ANC won 11. 1 ward was contested in Gauteng, and was retained by the opposition. 1 ward was contested in the Western Cape. This ward was previously held by the DA and was won by the ANC. This victory in the Matzikama ward in the Western Cape reaffirms the strides we are making in realising our vision to win back the Western Cape. The African National Congress thanks everyone who took time out to vote yesterday and sends its gratitude as well to the multitude volunteers and supporters of the ANC who worked tirelessly in the run up to the by-elections. We are humbled and inspired by the reaffirmation of our people's support and trust in the ANC; as such the ANC calls upon all our deployees to live up to the confidence that has been shown in us. The outcomes of the recent meeting of the National Executive Committee and the bold stance we have taken in Mbashe and elsewhere are a testament to the fact that the ANC will not hesitate to act decisively in instances where any of our public representatives seek to subvert democracy and display ill discipline in the course of delivering on the mandate given to us by the people. The ANC further calls upon all eligible voters, within and outside the borders of South Africa, to take part in the upcoming voter registration weekend on the 8th to 9th February. It is our collective responsibility to ensure all those who are eligible to vote register. Working together, we must consolidate the gains of 20 years of democracy and play an active part in moving South Africa forward.
