Memorial for Comrade Eric Singh, today

The Johannesburg memorial service and burial of anti-apartheid struggle
veteran Comrade Eric Singh, who died last month, will take place today,
Saturday 29 March

Eric Ushaber Singh was born in Durban in 1932. After leaving school he
worked as a machinist in the garment industry in Durban and served as a shop
steward. He joined the Natal Indian Youth Congress in 1951, and the South
African Communist Party. He served as the General Secretary of the Natal
Indian Congress from 1956 and into the 1960s, and was in and out of
detention under the laws of the apartheid regime. While awaiting trial he
was advised to leave the country, and did so in 1965. In 1967 he was
deployed to the German Democratic Republic, where he learnt to be a printer
and became manager of the ANC's Sechaba magazine. In 1979 he was deployed to
Dar-es-Salaam for four years, serving in ANC structures and assisting SACTU
and Radio Freedom. He returned to Berlin in 1983.

His friend Detlev Reichel wrote:

"The GDR became his second home. He was a principled friend of the socialist
German state without being blinkered dogmatically. East Germany's active
solidarity with the liberation struggle in South Africa resulted in his
principled relationship with that country. Solidarity is not a one-way
road."
