MEC wants Alex eviction investigation Erin Bates, eNCA, Johannesburg, 5 June 2014 Gauteng Human Settlements MEC Jacob Mamabolo told displaced Alexandra residents he wants an investigation the legality of their eviction. On Wednesday, the Red Ants evicted around 200 residents, including minors, from two abandoned factories in Alexandra, Johannesburg. The premises border First Avenue and Awkright Avenue on stands 200 and 203. The Randburg Magistrate's court reportedly issued an eviction order in 2011 for people living on the premises. In a press statement issued by the Gauteng government on Thursday, Mamabolo said lawyers must study that order. "We have instructed our lawyers to study the judgement, the legality of the eviction order, and also check the ownership of two properties in which people were evicted," said Mamabolo in rhe press release. "We need to be very clear on the facts so that we know whom are we dealing with as we move forward. They must also check any other fact relating to this eviction." Currently, the identity of the property owner is unclear. "It's a bit of a mystery," said an attorney representing the evicted residents. The attorney added that the original attorneys representing the business owner in the 2011 court proceedings could not be traced. Mambolo told the community members he has appointed a service provider to build temporary structures to accommodate "all" families displaced until the matter is resolved. For now, affected residents will be transferred to the Marlboro Emergency Centre and a community hall before a cold front reaches Gauteng. According to the statement, they will be transferred to the Marlboro Emergency Centre and a community hall "before a cold front reaches Gauteng." While the 200-odd residents move from one shelter to another, Mamabolo says different types of houses are needed to accommodate Alexandra residents, and there is a problem of lack of land. "We are going to work together with the city to come up with a model that will change the landscape of Alexandra", concluded Mamabolo. Additional reporting by Sapa.
