SADTU urges Gauteng teachers to 'defend ANC's control of government'

Setumo Stone, Business Day, Johannesburg, 9 July 2014

TEACHERS in Gauteng should come up with strategies to defend the African
National Congress's (ANC's) control of government in the province during the
upcoming 2016 municipal elections, South African Democratic Teachers Union
(SADTU) Gauteng chairman Eddie Kekana says.

Speaking on Wednesday at the start of a provincial conference attended by
186 delegates in Benoni, Mr Kekana said in 2016 Gauteng would again, as in
the previous polls, become the target of those who wanted to take over the
administration to accumulate wealth and not serve citizens.

Mr Kekana also urged delegates at the three-day conference, which ends on
Friday, to propose solutions to ensure that the province's municipalities
were defended. He said Gauteng was important because it was the economic hub
of the country.

"Those who want to take it over just want to accumulate wealth. Their brief
is to amass wealth," he said.

Eight posts for the leadership of SADTU in Gauteng are expected to be
contested during the provincial conference.

Mr Kekana said SADTU should press ahead with the campaign to rewrite South
Africa's history curriculum and to make the subject compulsory in schools.
"We cannot forever pride ourselves (while) still dealing with misleading and
painful history," he said.

He warned against emerging "vigilante trade unions driven by the selfish
interests of those who lead them. These threaten the unity and cohesion of
the federation (Congress of South African Trade Unions) and the movement
(ANC)."

Without mentioning the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa
(NUMSA) by name, Mr Kekana said some COSATU affiliates were adopting
"counter-revolutionary resolutions".

Last December, NUMSA took a resolution not to support the ANC in the
election and to consider the possibility of forming a political party to
contest the 2016 election.

"Theirs is just to accumulate and become filthy rich," said Mr Kekana. "They
posed as defenders of the poor and could even speak the language, but we
know that they are deceiving you."

During the general elections on May 7, the ANC's support in the province
declined from 64% in 2009 to 54%. This was blamed on poor service delivery,
a growing black middle class not dependent on state social services, as well
as the residents' disgruntlement with the controversial e-tolling scheme on
major highways.

The Democratic Alliance got the second-highest number of votes in the
province at 31% (from 22% in 2009), followed by Julius Malema's Economic
Freedom Fighters (EFF) at 10%.

The EFF had sought to challenge the outcome of the Gauteng election results
claiming foul play on the part of the ANC, but later withdrew the dispute.
