*Sing the national anthem and the Internationale *

We should settle the debate and agree that the national anthem must be sung
and instilled in every South African. Every South African citizen must
embrace the national anthem, and thus playing it every day is an important
step. Having said that, it is important that the working class learns to
sing the *Internationale *as well. Every communist must know the history
and relevance of the *Internationale*, sing it and also teach other workers.

The *Internationale* is not a song of indoctrination at all. It is a song
to conscientise workers about their situation. As such, the bourgeoisie
shivers (and must always shiver) every time they see workers sing it.
Unfortunately, many of our comrades cannot sing this song. I have noticed
in our meetings how our own comrades simply fail to sing this very
important song. How then can we call ourselves communists? The song forms
an integral part of political education and should never be taken lightly.
Communists must therefore know it by heart and sing it on a daily basis.

In order to instil this discipline, it is important that the song be
thoroughly practiced in all communists’ meetings, conferences and at work.
There should never be a communists’ meeting without the *Internationale*
being sung, and in other relevant cases should be discussed so that its
importance is understood. The working class’ consciousness will be slowly
but surely eroded is we ignore this issue. Branches of the Party must
ensure that every branch meeting begins and ends with the singing of the
*Internationale*. In this way the workers in the communities will start
singing the song and in no time it shall be an unofficial national anthem.
Music is one of the many ways which help conscientise the working class.
The best place to begin, therefore, is the singing of the *Internationale*.
