Mantashe calls for DENOSA to unite

African National Congress (ANC) secretary general Gwede Mantashe has called
on the Democratic Nursing Union of South Africa (DENOSA) to use its
influence in Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) to unite
warring factions and prevent a split.

Mantashe today addressed the seventh National DENOSA Congress, where he
warned against the destruction of COSATU and what he says would be the
demise of the country's labour movement.

"DENOSA can play its role by pulling together the different factions in the
federation and unify the federation. You do that by not being sensational or
emotional in dealing with divisions," Mantashe told the union.

DENOSA represents about 72,000 nurses and health professionals across the
country, and is seen as having notable influence within COSATU.

Mantashe's call to unite factions follows the National Union of Metalworkers
of South Africa's near expulsion from the federation at a central committee
meeting last week.

Meanwhile, South African Communist Party general secretary Blade Nzimande
has told DENOSA members that any COSATU affiliates who want to leave the
alliance will only end up splitting themselves.

Nzimande addressed DENOSA delegates in Boksburg today, where he called on
COSATU to organise the most vulnerable sectors of society and maintain its
status as an alliance partner.
