NUMSA defiant after expulsion

Metalworkers' union NUMSA has not ruled out forming a trade union federation
after being expelled from COSATU on Saturday.

NUMSA, which has vowed to fight the expulsion, said the knives were now out
for its close ally, COSATU general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi.

"We can form a new federation. That remains an open option," NUMSA general
secretary Irvin Jim said, briefing the media in Johannesburg yesterday.

"Vavi is next on the (purge) list. They will completely ban Vavi. I don't
think they will spare Vavi. It's clear he's next on the list. I'm convinced
they will dismiss him. They don't want that man in the federation," he said.
Vavi could not be reached for comment.

Jim said there was no basis for their expulsion from COSATU in the early
hours of Saturday morning, during a sitting of the special central executive
committee, which started on Friday.

"We hate the neo-liberal policies the ANC has been championing over the past
20 years. We are completely defiant and unapologetic. (ANC secretary-general
Gwede) Mantashe can look for the nearest cliff and jump."

NUMSA are to hold provincial shop steward councils to give their members an
opportunity to reflect on the union's expulsion and chart a way forward.

NUMSA's expulsion was because of resolutions it adopted at its special
national congress last year to extend its scope by recruiting members in
sectors where other COSATU unions operate.

COSATU president Sdumo Dlamini said: "We are not commenting. We will issue a
statement on Tuesday."
