Mega housing plans for Gauteng

Ntombi Nkosi, The New Age, Johannesburg, 10 November 2014

The days of building small and sporadic housing projects of about 100 to 200
units will soon be gone and replaced by mega housing projects.

The Gauteng government said such small scale projects are normally far from
economic opportunities and transport infrastructure and they do not make a
meaningful dent in addressing the housing backlog.

This was revealed at a two-day human settlements lekgotla which was held in
Sedibeng.

Addressing the lekgotla on Friday, Gauteng Premier David Makhura expressed
the need to modernise human settlements by turning to catalytic mega housing
projects which should yield no less than 15000 housing units per project.

"These mega housing projects will be well planned and coordinated across
Gauteng and should be located within economically active areas that are also
well connected to transport infrastructure," human settlements MEC Jacob
Mamabolo said.

The lekgotla brought together all leaders within the human settlements
sector in Gauteng including Rand Water and Eskom to map a high impact
provincial housing programme intended to change the housing landscape in
Gauteng.

Key among the deliberations were plans for the implementation of new mega
projects, acceleration of housing delivery, formalisation and eradication of
informal settlements, improving access to all forms of housing products
across all income groups and regeneration of old townships.

Mamabolo is expected to share outcomes of the lekgotla and plans for the
future of human settlements in Gauteng today.
