Delayed launch of NUMSA's United Front not a 'crisis'

Karl Gernetzky, Business Day, Johannesburg, 12 December 2014

The National Union of Metalworkers of SA (NUMSA) announced on Thursday that
the launch of the United Front has been delayed until next year.

This may be a signal the metalworkers union's attempt to spearhead a new
movement to challenge the current socioeconomic order is foundering.

NUMSA had resolved to form the United Front to fight for working-class
issues, a possible forerunner to the formation of a worker's party.

This weekend will instead see a "people's assembly" to discuss the formal
launch of the party, which might take place around April next year, NUMSA
general secretary Irvin Jim said on Thursday.

The level of support being registered for the United Front has been widely
questioned, including by the South African Communist Party (SACP) - which
NUMSA maintains is part of a "right-wing clique" within the tripartite
alliance that is attempting to neuter organised labour.

Numerous organisations including unions such as the Association of
Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) have rebuffed efforts from NUMSA
and other organisers at engagement, while a march in Ekurhuleni last month
registered a dismal turnout.

A failure to gain traction ahead of the launch was however denied by NUMSA
on Thursday.

"I must be very sincere and absolutely honest - the response on the United
Front call has been very big to a point where we could be launching this
weekend. There is no crisis," Mr Jim said. NUMSA, which has been expelled
from COSATU, said on Thursday it would continue its attempts to return to
the federation, through legal challenges to the constitutionality of its
expulsion, as well as its appeal directly to COSATU.
