NUMSA drums up support NUMSA's Irvin Jim is in the US to meet with influential black unions Luyolo Mkentane, The New Age, Johannesburg, 8 January 2015 NUMSA is on an international offensive to promote the launch of the United Front, a possible forerunner to the formation of a workers party. Irvin Jim, the general secretary of NUMSA, is expected to drum up support for the cause during a meeting with the Congress of Black Trade Unionists at the Institute for Policy Studies in the US capital Washington DC today. The New Age front page, 8 January 2015.jpg The meeting, to be held at the Institute for Policy Studies at 16th and L Street, from 1pm to 2pm, will be co-hosted by Bill Lucy, the international secretary-treasurer of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. In an email invitation which was leaked to The New Age, Jim will also address a public event from 6pm to 8pm to be held at Busboys and Poets, a restaurant, bookstore and lounge, on 5th and K Street. The invitation reads in part: "Please join us for a special event with Irvin Jim, National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) general secretary, speaking about NUMSA and the exciting new developments with the Preparatory Assembly of the United Front in South Africa. "Actor, activist, and filmmaker Danny Glover will be joining Irvin for this event. Grammy-nominated musician Carolyn Malachi will also perform." Glover was in the country last year when he picketed with NUMSA outside the Japanese embassy in Pretoria against car manufacturer Nissan's refusal to grant the Automobile Workers Union of America the right to form a union. When contacted by The New Age yesterday, Jim's deputy Karl Cloete said: "The GS (general secretary) has gone to the US to clarify the NUMSA special national congress resolutions to those who have read them but want to have interactions and engagements on them. "He will also share the outcomes of the successful preparatory assembly of the United Front which took place in Kempton Park in December." Cloete said Jim would be telling "everyone" about the work NUMSA had done on the United Front which was aimed at coordinating shop-floor struggles with those happening in communities; and the exploratory work towards the formation of a possible Movement for Socialism to contest the 2016 local government elections, among other things. NUMSA is fighting its expulsion last year from COSATU for its controversial resolution, calling on the federation to break away from the ANC-led tripartite alliance, the formation of the United Front and preparation of ground for the possible formation of a worker's party called the Movement for Socialism. COSATU second deputy president Zingiswa Losi said: "NUMSA is not an affiliate of COSATU. What it does outside the country is not of concern to COSATU because they are not an affiliate. "We can't comment on what the NUMSA leadership is doing, that's for NUMSA members."
