NUM Press Alert, 20 February 2015 Protest March to Glencore Offices in Middleburg, Mpumalanga The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) will embark on a protest march against Glencore in Middleburg tomorrow (21 March 2015) This is after Glencore took a decision to close down Optimum Coal Mine in Mpumalanga. The proposed closure of these operations would affect approximately 1000 permanent employees and 500 contractors. The decision to close down the operations has left our members shocked because they were not given any prior notice of closure. The protest march will take place on the 21st of February 2015 at Steve Tshwete Municipality on Walter Sisulu Drive to Shanduka Central Offices. The march will start at 09h00. We call on all mineworkers and the surrounding communities to support the NUM members at Optimum Coal Mine in their march to Glencore Offices in Middleburg.
