ANC will find it hard to win in province, says Phosa

Setumo Stone, Business Day, Johannesburg, 23 February 2015

Former African National Congress (ANC) treasurer-general Mathews Phosa says
that "problems on the ground" in Mpumalanga would make it difficult for the
ANC in the province to win next year's local government elections.

Mr Phosa on Sunday warned against factionalism in the ANC, saying the party
should do away with the practice of "members of the ANC belonging to other
members". He was delivering a lecture in memory of former South African
Communist Party (SACP) leader Joe Slovo in Middelburg Mpumalanga.

"Members must support the party and not individuals. Those who divide us
must go," Mr Phosa told members and supporters of the SACP, which has been
campaigning for the ANC to remove David Mabuza as premier and "deploy him
elsewhere".

Last month saw violent incidents in Kanyamazane township in Mpumalanga when
the same SACP memorial lecture was cancelled because ANC members supporting
Mr Mabuza objected to Mr Phosa's appearance as keynote speaker, and attacked
their SACP allies with sticks, stones and knobkerries.

Last September Mr Phosa delivered an intelligence report alleging that Mr
Mabuza was a former apartheid spy.

Business Day understands that the ANC is still looking into the veracity of
the report.

On Thursday ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe held a meeting with the
ANC's leaders in Mpumalanga in a bid to tackle violence against the SACP.
Another high-profile meeting was held on Friday, between ANC veterans and
members of the SACP, where it was concluded that the Kanyamazane incident
should be investigated.

Earlier in Sunday's proceedings former ANC Youth League deputy president
Ronald Lamola challenged "senior ANC leaders" to reveal Mr Mabuza's struggle
credentials. Mr Lamola said that if Luthuli House failed to take action then
ANC members and supporters would take matters into their own hands. "Luthuli
House has been too lenient to this man," he told about 400 SACP and ANC
members attending the lecture.

Mr Mabuza said last month that "for me to be the provincial ANC chairperson,
I was not just dropped from heaven. I have worked hard through the ranks of
the government and the ANC, but because I am ANC chairperson and premier,
today I am called with names."

He has said there is a personal "problem" between him and Mpumalanga SACP
provincial secretary Bonakele Majuba.

Mr Majuba said on Sunday ANC members should guard against "those who claim
to be seniors while they were apartheid spies".
