YCLSA Riot Mkhwanazi District Press Statement, 30 March 2015

YCLSA Condemns Sexual Exploitation of Women

The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] in the Riot Mkhwanazi
District condemns the act of an alleged rape of a student that has
transpired on the 22nd this month in the premises of the University of
Zululand, which is in our District. The perpetrator(s) in the alleged rape
case is said to be a student leader appointed by the institution.

We are worried if people who call themselves leaders are found in incidences
of women abuse and rape. We are not opposed to social gatherings of young
people when they are enjoying, but we oppose the use of these gatherings as
a platform to engage in sexual offenses that are oppressive and demeaning to
young people.

The YCLSA branch in the University of Zululand has made the District aware
of the incidence. We are against the opportunism of the IFP's SADESMO on the
matter, by using it as a campaigning tool against the ANC narrowly for 2016
local government elections. We are conscious that women and children abuse
is a societal issue which requires everyone and young people in particular
to unite and fight against the scourge and become activists against all
sorts of exploitation, in this case women sexual exploitation. We are
assuring the public that the accused (which we will not mention) are not
members of the YCLSA and attempts to say Young Communists or Progressive
Leaders are the accused are a fallacy.

We condemn this behaviour as it has taken the public into awe; this places
the University in our district as a place of women exploitation, and has
risks of being a push-factor for those young people in the public who wish
to further their studies in the University of Zululand. We call on all young
women on the District to approach relevant stakeholders (SAPS, Councillors,
Traditional Leaders, Social Workers, and Psychiatrists etc.) to report all
forms of sexual abuse. We are confident that if young and old women speak
about their scourge and abuse, it is on that platform that we will be able
to decisively deal with the culprits and be able to fight against this
crisis in building a better and a humane society.

The YCLSA is a progressive youth formation in South Africa. It is in this
regard that we support the cardinal principle of 'not guilty until proven
guilty', that the law should take its course and perpetrators should face
the legal arm. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the victimized woman
and emphatically all who have faced a similar challenge should come afore.

Young People Unite and Fight against Women and Children Abuse!!!
