COSATU to decide on Vavi's fate today

SATAWU says Vavi is 'not building' COSATU

Ngwako Modjadji, The Citizen, Johannesburg, 30 March 2015

While trade union federation COSATU Central Executive Committee (CEC) is
currently under way at COSATU House in Braamfontein, the South African
Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) general secretary Zenzo Mahlangu
said the meeting will decide what action to take against Zwelinzima Vavi.

While not confirming that disciplinary action would be taken against Vavi,
Mahlangu said: "The course of action to be taken will be determined today. I
am convinced it will be an appropriated action."

This after Vavi called a media briefing on Sunday saying he was not
resigning from the labour federation.

"This is a deliberate act of defiance on my part, even if in the end it
turns out to be symbolic," Vavi said.

"It sends a message to workers that we must refuse to hand the organisation
over on a platter, and must not only walk away when all alternatives to
rescue it have been exhausted."

Vavi is boycotting the CEC meeting for a second time. Vavi's fate is likely
to top the agenda of the CEC meeting.

Mahlangu described what Vavi said as unfortunate.

"I think everybody has a right to say whatever he wants to say," Mahlangu
said.

"We believe that the meeting like this one will therefore decide on what
action to take."

He said leaders of affiliates and COSATU will decide if what Vavi said does
build the embattled COSATU or not.

"Clearly it does not build," Mahlangu said.

"This thing has been going for some time. It has to be sorted one way or the
other today."
