Candyfloss and ice cream as over 1,000 people gather for anti-xenophobia
march

Katharine Child, The Times, Johannesburg, 23 April 2015

More than 1000 people turned out in Parktown in support of the
anti-xenophobia march that was set to start on Thursday afternoon.

Groups of people sang and danced in Piet Roos Park.

The atmosphere was festive with vendors were selling ice cream and
candyfloss.

School pupils were also seen arriving.

Many people carried anti-xenophobia placards, one of which read "Inequality
is the root of evil not foreigners".

A group of 10 young men travelled from Rustenberg in a taxi at a cost of
R4500, despite being unemployed.

One of them, Tshepiso Morake, said they had to come from the North West
province to "support our brothers and sisters".

A group of tenants from China Mall arrived and said a large contingent of
Chinese people would attend the march.

Johnny Xu, a manager at China Mall in Crown Mines, said he felt "welcome" in
South Africa.

The Africa Diaspora Forum was also represented. "We believe in a united
Africa," said Star Ndlovu, a Zimbabwean who works for the group that
represents migrants' interests.

Many members of The Treatment Action Campaign were also in attendance.

About 200 community workers dressed in orange overalls were present to guide
the marchers to Mary Fitzgerald Square.
