Vavi snubs Malema call Itumeleng Mafisa, The New Age, Johannesburg, 4 May 2015 Zwelinzima Vavi has snubbed Julius Malema's call for a rival labour federation to COSATU. The former COSATU general secretary was reacting to the EFF leader's commitment to rally behind expelled union NUMSA leader Irvin Jim and Vavi, should they form a new labour federation, at a May Day gathering in Port Elizabeth. However, Vavi said it was not Malema's place to make such a call. "We do not receive our mandate from political parties. We get it from workers." Vavi said he was still a firm believer in the ANC-led tripartite alliance. "I do believe in the dream of one union, one industry. We should have done more to enforce it. I am a very strong believer in the alliance I believe that if it could work it could take this country to new heights in relation to political stability as well as advancing the national democratic revolution," he said. Vavi was expelled from COSATU a few weeks ago. "The problem that I always had is that the alliance has not been working as an instrument to effect fundamental transformation of society, but as a voting tool for the ANC," he said. Vavi said he still believed unity was the only way to strengthen COSATU. From: http://tnaepaper.co.za/ -- -- You are subscribed. This footer can help you.
