Cuban 5 Travel to Cape Town

Prensa Latina, Havana, from Cape Town, 22 June 2015

The Cuban five anti-terrorist fighters already freed from prison in the US
and known as The Cuban Five, arrived in the South African city of Cape Town
(Legislative Capital) where they will be received by the South African
Parliament.

Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and
René González experienced a whole torrent of popular support and love, since
they arrived in South Africa.

Marius Fransman, secretary of the African National Congress (ANC) in the
province of Western Cape, where Cape Town is located, said they felt an
indescribable joy with having the Cuban Five together with them, and
remembered what the birth of a new South Africa represented for Cuba.

"This is a sentiment reiterated in a country where memories are fresh from a
past of apartheid which we do not want to repeat," said Fransman.

The Cuban Five immediately went to the University of Western Cape, where
members of the group awaited by students and workers of higher learning.

It is something that runs through the skin of the people here. The South
Africans expressed their admiration and affection for the heroes with their
songs of combat.

One of the speakers was the South African Father Michael Lapsley, an example
of how much can the human will.

Lapsley, a friend of the Cuban Five and particularly of Gerardo's, regarded
this visit as an event as expected.

Laspley, who suffered [as a victim of an apartheid-regime parcel bomb] how
terrible terrorism is, said he was sure that one day he would walk together
with Gerardo on Cape Town.

In his words, Father Lapsley called for an end to the blockade that for more
than half a century has imposed successive US administrations against the
Caribbean nation.

Gerardo repeated "thank you, thank you" for the support they received during
the years in prison and so meant that support for the achievement of this
freedom to celebrate today.

Meanwhile, from somewhere in the main hall of the University a voice shouted
"Five, Cuba".

And it is perhaps the synthesis of this visit. Gerardo, Ramón, Antonio,
Fernando and René remain in South Africa pursuant to an invitation from the
ANC until next July 3 when continue trip to Namibia and Angola, the last two
stops of this tour of Africa.

During these days they will visit interesting and historical places in South
Africa, in the provinces of Limpopo, Gauteng, Free State and KwaZuluNatal.
