NEHAWU 3.png Media Alert, 24 June 2015 NEHAWU to Celebrate the Release of the Cuban Five NEHAWU invites the members of the media to a Cuban Solidarity Rally (14h00- 16h00) that will be held at the Johannesburg City Hall on Thursday the 25th of June 2015 and the NEHAWU Awards Ceremony and Cuban Café, at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre (18h00-21h00) in Newtown, Johannesburg, to welcome the release of the five Cuban revolutionaries and anti-terrorist fighters, who were incarcerated in America. These political prisoners (Rene Gonzalez, Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, Gerardo Hernandez and Ramon Labanino) were arrested in the US after being accused of fomenting terrorism. They are currently visiting the country until the 3rd of July 2015 to share their historic release with international friends, who played a key solidarity role in the campaign for their release. NEHAWU has been recognised as one of the major role players and on the 25th of June the union will be honouring these heroes and also hosting a Cuban Cafe. As an internationalist organisation, we have, for a long time, been working with all progressive forces campaigning for their release. Since June 2012, the union consistently protested outside the US Embassy in Pretoria on the 5th of every month and also submitted a series of letters of demands to President Obama demanding the release of these five Cuban patriots. We also joined the nationwide protests of President Obama’s visit in the country. We are still continuing to demand for the lifting of the devastating anti-Cuban, US policy of financial, commercial and economic blockade. Cuba’s sovereignty including its political and social systems should be respected. The details of the rally are as follows: • Date: 25 June 2015 (Thursday) • Time: 14h00-16h30 • Venue: Johannesburg City Hall The details of the NEHAWU Awards Ceremony and the Cuban Café are as follows: • Date: 25 June 2015 (Thursday) • Time: 18h00- 21h00 • Venue: Sci-Bono Discovery Centre, Newtown Members of the media are all invited to cover and report on the events.
