27 July 2015 COSATU congratulates SADTU General Secretary on his election as EI Vice President at Ottawa, Canada The Congress of South African Trade Unions congratulates the South African Democratic Teachers Union General Secretary, Comrade Mugwena Maluleke for being elected as the Vice President at the successful 7th World Congress of the Education International [EI] at Ottawa, Canada held last week. COSATU acknowledges all the resolutions undertaken to eradicate commercialization and privatization of education provision across the globe. Cde Maluleke will be serving with workers' leadership from the Netherlands, Japan, Germany, Brazil, United States of America, Colombia, Norway, France, Korea, Canada, United Kingdom, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, Senegal, Nigeria, India, Philippines, amongst others. Cde Maluleke is a member of the Federation's Central Executive Committee [CEC]. COSATU agrees that 'the fight against the scourge of private enterprises must start in the classrooms', led by progressive Trade Unions globally. The new Global Sustainable Development Goals programme is supported by COSATU, with all learners afforded an opportunity to be at school across all countries, the tackling of child labour becoming a daily campaign at all communities and affording of all migrant labourers' children the right to education across all countries becoming a Trade Union issue. COSATU congratulates Cde Maluleke and wishes him well in his endeavour to enhance fighting for the rights of every child to education globally and also organizing locally in South Africa to attain the vision of the Freedom Charter; The doors of learning and culture shall be opened! The use of technology to advance education provision, the eradication of mud schools in communities, the enabling of a required class size for quality education provision, eradication of discrimination and violence in schools and dealing with education provision in conflict areas, will become a centre of global struggles.
