SAMWU prepares for Congress
Working conditions to take centre stage at upcoming municipal workers' union
meeting
Itumeleng Mafisa, The New Age, Johannesburg, 17 August 2015
The South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) said preparations for the
union's leadership race were under way.
The union will hold its 11th national congress later this month.
SAMWU general secretary Walter Theledi said the congress would take place
from August 26-29 in Durban.
"We trust the national congress will better prepare the union to fight for
decent working conditions including wages in the upcoming salary and wage
negotiations," Theledi said.
Following the union's central executive committee meeting earlier this
month, the union announced it had accepted the latest wage offer from the
South African Local Goverment Association (SALGA).
"Negotiations with SALGA were undoubtedly the most difficult.
"Based on regional reports, which were received from provinces, the central
executive committee therefore accepts the proposal as presented without
additions or subtractions," he said.
The proposal includes a multi-year agreement effective from July 1, 2015 to
June 30, 2018, a 7% across-the-board salary increase in the first year of
the agreement and CPI +1% for the remainder of the agreement.
The deal also includes a sector minimum wage of R6014.93 with effect from
July 1, 2015 and the retention of the 60:40 employer medical contribution.
However, maximum employer contributions would increase to a maximum of
R3871.
The deal was further sweetened by a new housing allowance dispensation for
low earners who were not servicing bonds, of an amount of R350, as well as a
homeowner's allowance of R700.
"The union is preparing for the future and that will entail preparing for
the new wage collective agreement, which will better the lives of municipal
and water board workers. We appeal to the employers to be sensitive to the
plight of our members," he said.
