SADTU Teachers at Work, with logo, smaller.png SADTU Statement, 25 August 2015 Death of Learners in the North West SADTU extends its condolences to the families of learners who died when their school was gutted by fire in the North West province The South African Democratic Teachers Union in the North West has learnt with shock about the tragedy that befell the School for the Deaf in Leeudoringstad, in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District. The Union wishes to extend its condolences to the school, the parents, community and all affected in this tragedy. We lower our flag in remembrance of the three learners who passed on during the fire that gutted the school buildings which include the hostel, administration block and the computer centre. We further wish the thirteen learners who are admitted in hospital a speedy recovery. As SADTU, we call on the government of North West province to urgently investigate the tragedy and, through different departments, provide the necessary support for the bereaved families and the traumatised school community. We are calling on government to leave no stone unturned in investigating this matter more especially in light of our call for safety in schools in a Memorandum presented to the Premier on 30th July 2015. The Department of Education has relegated the matter of schools' safety to the dustbin, and this remains unacceptable to us as a union. We further call for a speedy and resolute investigation in the events that led to the death of learners and a driver from the same school in a car accident in the recent past.
