SADTU Statement, 25 August 2015

Glory to SAMWU 11th Congress

As a fellow-affiliate of the fighting workers' federation COSATU, the South
African Democratic Teachers Union salutes SAMWU on the occasion of its 11th
National Congress, 26th-29th August in Durban.

SADTU heartily supports SAMWU's Congress theme, "Fighting for Decent Jobs,
Wages and Accessible Services".

We congratulate SAMWU on its recent successful negotiations with employers.

The principle of one industry, one union is the precondition for our goal of
one country, one federation.

On 3rd of April 1968, the day before he was assassinated in Memphis,
Tennessee, Dr Martin Luther King Junior preached to the striking sanitation
workers of that city, as he had come to do, and said:

"Like anybody, I would like to live a long life - longevity has its place.
But I'm not concerned about that now. I've seen the Promised Land. I may not
get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we, as a people,
will get to the Promised Land"

United together as SAMWU, SADTU, our mighty federation COSATU, and our
allies the ANC, SACP and SANCO, we too will get to the Promised Land!

May the memory of Dr Martin Luther King Junior, the great internationalist
who sacrificed his life for the sanitation workers, bring blessings and
glory to your Congress!

A luta continua! The struggle continues!
