South African Communist Party Eastern Cape, 30 August 2015 Press statement: "SACP is saddened by the deaths in the EC roads" The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Eastern Cape has learnt with a great sense of shock and sadness about the fatal road accidents in the Eastern Cape roads. We believe that one lost life is too many and no life should be lost, we are saddened by the fact that so many people, breadwinners, and the future leaders perish on the roads due to accidents. The minibus accident that unfortunately happened on the Wapadsberg pass near Cradock claimed nine (09) lives, leaving eight (08) people injured. The bus accident that tragically happened at Nkelekethe Village near Willowvale claimed 35 lives, including six (06) young children and injuring many other people. We wish to send the word of caution to all the drivers in the roads to drive with extra caution, caring for those they carry and those on the road. We would like to also call on bus and minibus owners to ensure safety on the roads by not using buses and minibuses that are not roadworthy. Another contributing factor to the sad reality of losing people in our roads is the bad rural road infrastructure. It is in this context that we are calling upon our government to improve the roads infrastructure to curb deaths in our roads. Part of resolving this challenge would be the implementation of affordable and quality integrated public transport system. We send our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who have passed on, we can only imagine the pain they should be feeling. We wish a speedy recovery to the injured people on both accidents. Let us all work together in putting an end to all kinds of accidents in our roads. Issued by the Eastern Cape.
