South African Communist Party

Eastern Cape Province, 30 August 2015

Press statement:

SACP is saddened by people being killed in motor vehicle accidents on
Eastern Cape roads

The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Eastern Cape is greatly
shocked and saddened by the fatal road accidents that occur in the Eastern
Cape. One life lost is too many and no life should be lost when that is
preventable. We are gravely worried by the fact that so many people,
breadwinners and future leaders, are perishing on our roads due to
accidents.

A tragic minibus accident that occurred on Friday night, 28 August at the
Wapadsberg pass near Cradock claimed nine lives, leaving eight people
injured.

A catastrophic bus accident that occurred yesterday morning, Saturday 29
August at Nkelekethe Village near Willowvale claimed 35 lives, including six
young children. Many other people were injured.

The SACP is sending heartfelt condolences to all the families for the sore
loss they have suffered from the untimely deaths of their loved ones. The
pain they are feeling will weigh like a nightmare as they go through this
trying time and will need urgent attention and professional assistance. The
state should find ways of intervening in this regard.

The SACP wishes a speedy and full recovery to those who were injured in both
accidents.

The SACP wishes to send a word of caution to all the drivers on our roads to
exercise extra care, to think about all the passengers, not only those in
their vehicles, but in other vehicles as well.

The SACP calls on bus and minibus owners to ensure that their vehicles are
roadworthy and do not compromise safety on our roads.

The SACP is also calling on our government to improve the roads
infrastructure, especially in rural areas where it is in the sad state of
reality.

The SACP reiterates its call for safe, affordable, reliable and integrated
public transport system which we believe will both improve conditions and go
a long way in reducing accidents on our roads.

Let us all work together in ending accidents on our roads.

Issued by the Eastern Cape.
