ANAs Will Not Improve SA's Basic Education

The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) says it only opposed the
holding of the Annual National Assessments (Ana) this week because to hold
them every year would not allow enough time for any remedial action to be
taken.
On Friday the Basic Education Ministry confirmed the tests were going to be
put on hold after SADTU said its members would not administer them.
The union says holding the tests every year would not improve education.
They say the tests should be held every three years, as that will allow
proper remedial action to be taken between assessments.
SADTU's deputy general secretary Nkosana Dolopi says, "Teachers don't want
to be seen as underperforming schools; there is a lot of cheating that is
happening at schools. People are just putting up numbers so their schools
are not seen as dysfunctional schools and being visited frequently by the
Department of Education; being punished."
